Matt is a Director with bases in London and Birmingham. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music (MA Musical Theatre and Licentiate)

Matt is the creator, composer and lyricist of ’The Most Hated Family In America’ – a musical adaptation of the story of the Westboro Baptist Church. Based on, yet going beyond, Louis Theroux’s BBC documentaries, the show seeks to provide a more complete account of the church’s history and the many characters involved in it. Matt also produced the first workshop of the show in February 2025 in association with Selladoor Worldwide, directed by Omar Okai. The show continues its development.

In 2023 Matt made his directorial debut with ‘BU21’ at the Old Joint Stock, Birmingham and followed up with the World Premiere of ‘PlayAI’ at Riverside Studios, a theatrical experiment consisting of the first commercial production written by ChatGPT, which he directed and produced in association with Jack Maple Productions (Bat Out Of Hell World Tour). Matt directed a new version of it for the University of Northampton in January 2024. He will also be directing ‘The Second Coming’, a new play from Eu-Jin Hwang, in Scotland later this year.

Matt is passionate about bringing his experiences as an autistic and LGBT+ person to his directing and teaching practice. He is particularly interested in directing new writing and contemporary revivals that seek to bring theatre to new audiences and which tackle current issues challenging society as well as having a developed interest in AI in theatre.
