Jonathan trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, making his professional debut as Rochester in Jane Eyre at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh.
In the West End, he created the role of Kenneth Horne in the long-running comedy smash Round the Horne… Revisited, playing him again in such shows as Horne A’Plenty and Round the Horne – Unseen and Uncut. Among many other stage roles, he’s also played Eisenring in The Fire Raisers (Battersea Arts Centre), Dr Rank in A Doll’s House (Salisbury Playhouse), Byron in Bloody Poetry (Boston Centre for the Arts, USA), Gerald in Time and the Conways (Mercury Colchester / Salisbury Playhouse) and Inspector Hubbard in Dial ‘M’ for Murder (Windsor Repertory Festival), as well as touring as Higgins in Pygmalion and Frank in Educating Rita. Among Jonathan’s directing credits is a highly successful revival of the all-female play Women of Twilight.
On screen, Jonathan played the leading role – famed parapsychologist Harry Price – in the acclaimed, part-animated feature film Borley Rectory. Other screen credits include the portmanteau feature 8 Weeks in Lockdown (8 semanas de Aislamiento) and, for the BBC, Lennon Naked, A History of Horror, Round the Horne… Revisited, WPC 56, The Canterville Ghost and several episodes of Father Brown. For BBC Radio he has appeared in The Corrupted, Twice Ken is Plenty (as Kenneth Horne), Loose Ends, Double Vision and as writer-presenter of A Date with [Valentine] Dyall.
Jonathan is also a noted film historian and the author of half-a-dozen books. He’s currently working on his seventh.
